The key document you need is John's marriage certificate which often lists the partipants parents. Death certificates and obits may also list the person's parents s well. That is your key. There are probably thousands of John Macleans (McLeans) in Scotland. I have a John MacLean b abt 1776 in Islay, who had 3 sons Neil, Archibald and Donald. Anyone of these boys could have fathered a John, such a common name!

Most of the settlers from Scotland settled in Ontario, try the Ontario Genealogical Society webpage, there's lots of birth/marriage/death and census info online.

Good luck
Norma
