I don't want to discourage you but I would strongly advise you to exhaust every resource to try and find out his parents name before you start trying to find him in Canada. Usually parents names are on Marriage Records. Have you been able to find one for your John? A middle name would also help. Another way to narrow down the pool of "Johns" would be if you knew whether he was Catholic or Presbyterian (Church of Scotland). That was a big division in the Scottish settlers early on.

I did a quick search of the 1881 Canadian Census available at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
There are 205 John MacLeans listed born between the years 1858 and 1868 so you can see the problem if you don't have any more information than you have given so far. The US Census of 1880 show 16 John MacLeans born in the same period in Canada, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, etc.living in the US.

However one thing that might help is that if his birthplace was listed as Canada it probably means Ontario. Ontario was usually what people meant when they referred to "Canada" pre-Confederation. You will notice on the 1880 US Census that some people will refer to being born in Canada and some Nova Scotia. That is because they were considered two different places. Wish you luck in your search
