John McLean (b. 1862) of Canada

Hi,

I'm looking for information about my great great grandfather, John McLean (b. 1862), originally from somewhere in Canada, who married Lily Mae Beardslee (b. 26 Feb 1868) in 1887 in Whittemore, Iosco County, Michigan. I think he immigrated to the U.S. in the 1880's. Their children were Murlin, Leo John, Charles, and Lucille. Lily died on 19 Aug 1934 and was born in Grasshopper Township, Atchinson County, Kansas. My grandfather, John Herbert (son of Leo John), remembers his grandfather John but doesn't know any information that could help in tracing the line. Obviously prior to 1880 records on John would come from Canada. I guess I don't know where to start there, especially without knowing which province John lived in.

The 1890 U.S. census did not list names, but only the place of origin of John's parents. According to the document his father is of Scotland and his mother is of Canada.

I am hoping to follow my McLean family line back as far as possible but I'm stuck at this point. Any help, or research tips I can get would be invaluable! Thanks.
