Hi. McLean, MacLean, McLaine, MacLane, and various other spellings are possible for the surname. I have anothr ancestor with the name Mackie. It is also known as MacKay. You mentioned having death certificates, and unsure of the reliablility of the information it contains. Here's a few sites you may want to consider: www.archives.ca - National Archives of Canada - Check for British Military Records. www.gov.ns.ca - The Provincial Archives of Nova Scotia. Like Ontario, I'm sure that at some point, it was required to register BMD's to the Govrnment. Perhaps you can check with them for a document. You should be able to ask about land records as well, and local Militia records in the Province. You might want to consider finding a town's website and see if there are wills that have been probated that you can get copies of. www.internment.net/can/index.htm - Cemetery Internments on line. ( There are many other sites around). www.libdex.com - This should give you a link to any library in North America, and perhaps track down a library in Nova Scotia or historical Society. www.abyznewslinks.com - Use this site to find any media outlet on the planet. Perhaps you can find a newspaper in the town your ancestor settled, and send a letter to the editor. www.vicu.utoronto.ca/archives/archives.htm - The United Church of Canada Archives. www.cdncouncilarchives.ca/cca_dir/rel_org.html - A listing of a majority of religious archives across Canada I hope that some of this helped. A.R.
