Sharon, From a quick Google search, your John Mackinnon appears to be the person, later Sir John Mackinnon, who took over the Mussoorie brewery from his brother-in-law, Henry Bohle.

A John Mackinnon conducted a school in Meerut in 1834 but shifted it to Mussoorie in 1835. Sir John Mackinnon is mentioned as having been an educationist so it seems to be the same person.

I have a Miller ancestor who served with HM 26th Foot in Meerut in 1834, hence my interest in Meerut of the 1830's.

FIBIS has a very good web site about British in India.

Lachlan
