Looking to start a Genealogy journey

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Scotland to attempt to look up possibly lost family members. My Uncle has established our tree back to 1755 on the Isle of Barra when an Iain Og MacKinnon immagrated to Nova Scotia. How can I take this to the next step?
