Subject: George Mackey and Mary Adams descendants

I would appreciate any comments, pro or con, about the following lineage:
My great grandfather was John Mackey, b. 1841 in Louisiana. His parents were George Mackey and Mary Ann Adams. Death certificate information lists George being born in Iowa and Mary Ann being born in Louisiana. John Mackey married Elizabeth Douglas in 1861 in Iron County, MO. They had 14 children, including my grandmother Pearl Mackey Hodge.

According to a recognized researcher who is a descendant of Lucinda Douglas (sister of Elizabeth Douglas), John Mackey came to MO with his father George when John was about 11 years old. This family does not turn up on an 1850 MO census. I think the following census verifies George and Mary Ann’s family. The 1860 census for Iron County, MO lists George McKay, age 47, b. in Mississippi with wife MaryAnn, age 33, also b. in Mississippi. The following children were listed: John, age 20; Ben, age 18; Elizabeth, age 14; George, age 11; Mary J., age 9; Sarah, age 5; and Matilda, 6 months. The first 4 children are listed as being born in Mississippi, and the last 3 children are born in MO. I think the Mississippi place of birth for George, Mary Ann, and the 4 children is in error.

The name on the census “McKay” is used often as a spelling of Mackey. In fact, a son of John Mackey (John Mackey, Jr.) went by the name McKay most of his life. His descendants today go by the name McKay. On the 1860 census, there is also a Benjamin Mackey (brother of John) b. 1845 in Louisiana. On an 1880 census for Reynolds County, MO, there is a Benjamin Mackey, age 36, b. in Louisiana and family: wife Martha, age 25, b. TN; son Francis M., age 13; and daughters Emma J, age 11, Julia A, age 8, Ellen S, age 6, Lucy B., age 4, and Docia, 6 months. All the children were b. in MO. On this census Benjamin lists both parents being b. in Louisiana. His wife Martha is Martha J. Price, according to Missouri Marriages, 1865, on Missouri Marriages also lists Julia Mackey, daughter of Ben Mackey, married Allen Mann in 1888.

I have verified John H. Mackey’s descendants through death records, marriage records, census reports, and of course, family memories. Since finding the information on George Mackey and Mary Ann Adams, I believe this adds to my Mackey ancestry.
