MACKEYs/ MACKIEs of ME, MA 1800s - 1900s descendants of George Mackey

Records indicate the spelling of the family name alternates. Why? I do not know, excepting the similarity in pronounciation. I am not sure if they are of Scottish or Irish descent. It seems too ambiguous. I hope an expert can inform whether there's a difference.

1850 Census Biddeford, York Co., ME (Biddeford-Saco) Maine:

George Mackey
Exoth, wife(maiden name unknown)
William, son
Martha, dau.
Mahala, dau.
Charlotte, dau.
Louisa, dau.
Esther, dau.
Mary, dau. (likely granddaughter my grgr grandmother, Mary Doe Prescott born Waterville, Maine 1843)

Not listed:
Jane/ Jennie, dau. (my grgrgr grandmother)
Ira, son

All are born in Maine according to census. I found Ira in Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA from later census dates and vital records from 1900s.

My grgrgr grandfather G. Arthur Prescott died while visiting home in 1843 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

My grgrgr great grandmother Jennie remarried. I do not know to whom.

If anyone is familiar with these or potentially related Mackey/ Mackie lines from Maine and Massachusetts, respectively and lived there during 1800s and 1900s please help.

George's sons Ira was a carpenter. His brother William was a sailor.
