Please consider FTDNA for your Y DNA test. We are beginning to see more McKee, MacKey and there are at least two surname groups and with YSearch you can search the entire database.

Have you searched for your J T Mackey origins within the West Tennessee McKee folks?

Tom / Thomas is a name used frequently in the McKee of Hardeman, Tipton, Lauderdale, Dyer and probably other West TN areas as well. Many of these came from Rutherford, Wilson, Maury, Williamson in Middle TN. The surname is spelled every way you can think of even on the census in the same county. Cora was a given name of a daughter in one of the late 1800 families in Tipton or Lauderdale and a "bunch" of the young men went to Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas after the war and into the 1870 period. It is a long shot but since you haven't found any other help maybe something there.
