James Mack, b 1824 Cattaraugus, NY is my brick wall as well. My great aunt tells a story that the last name used to be McKay or Mackie, then changed to Mack. I'm just picking this back up after a break, so haven't had a chance to research this much, but thought I'd post this possibility for you.
