Rev. EDWARD JACOB MACK (MOCK) (1822-1887), Moravia
The Rev. Edward Jacob MACK was born 25 Feb 1822 at present day Forsyth County, North Carolina and died there 16 Jan 1887.He married Maria (Mary) J. SPAUGH on 16 Aug 1843 at Stokes County, North Carolina.Mary was born 27 May 1821 in NC and died there 11 Sep 1913.Both familes were Moravian and Mary and Jacob are buried at the Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard, at Friedberg, Davidson County, North Carolina.
Mary was the daughter of George SPACH (1789-1866) and Catherina SIDES (1796-1827).Edward (went by Jacob?) was the son of Jacob MOCK (1790-1841) and Sarah (Sally) SPACH (1790-1843).
Sometime after marrying Jacob and Mary became missionaries for the Moravian Church and went to the Cherokee Lands.I can't find the family in the 1850 census, but in 1860 they were listed as page 1163 of the Indian Territory portion of the Arkansas census; Cherokee Nation, Delaware District.Jacob was listed Rev. E.J. MACK, Moravian Missionary.Five of their eight known children (John, Ephraim, Samuel, Mary, and Anna) were living with them (all born in Cherokee Nation).I can't find the family in the 1870 census.(Does anyone have access to a 1870 Oklahoma census index?).In 1880 the family (parents, and children Anna and Emma) were living at Arcadia Township, Family #137, Davidson County, North Carolina.
The eight known children were:
1. Johanna Catherine MACK (1844-1924) married William T. VOGLER Sr. (1843-1926) and are buried at the Salem Moravian Church Cemetery, at Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina.They had three children: Henry E. VOGLER (1868-1930); William Nathaniel VOGLER (1871-1887) and Emma Elizabeth VOGLER (1876-1911).I don't know when or where Johanna and William were married.
2. John A. MACK (or MOCK?) was born 1849 at Cherokee Nation and died in 1911 (where?).He married Emma M. LeVAN (when and where?) and had four known children: Annie E. MACK (married Charles E. WEAVER and then PALMER C. BREWER); Laura E. MACK (married Harry S. LONGWORTH, then John C. FISCHER, and then Robert L. HALL; Walter MACK; Arthur A. MACK (married Lillian WAGNER); Edwin MACK; John A. MACK and Mary J. MACK.Does anyone know where this family lived?It is not known for sure whether they went by MACK or MOCK.
3. Ephraim (J. or T.?) MACK, born 1851 in Cherokee Nation.Nothing else known.
4. Samuel W. MACK was born 1854 at Cherokee Nation.He first married Ellen K. SNYDER and then Mary REDLINE (when or where for either?).Ellen was the mother of two children by Samuel: Howard S. MACK (married Alley ARNER) and William T. MACK (married Blanche YEAGER).Where did the family live???
5. Mary J. MACK was born 1856 at Cherokee Nation.She married Mr. DOUGLASS.Nothing else known.
6. Anna Louise MACK was born 28 Oct 1860 at Cherokee Nation and died 28 Mar 1911 at Forsyth County, North Carolina.She married Lewis Charles CROUCH (1862-1911) on 18 Oct 1883 at Davidson County, North Carolina.Anna and Lewis are buried at the Friedberg Moravian Church Cemetery, at Friedberg, Davidson County, North Carolina.In 1900 the family was living at Winston Township, Forsyth County, North Carolina when Anna said she was the mother of ten, seven living.Known children were: A. Elizabeth CROUCH (1884-??) who married Jerry B. SPAUGH and then J. Leonard MATTHEWS; A. Ethel CROUCH (???-???) who married Joseph L. MATTHEWS; Frederick A. CROUCH (1885-1886); Lucy M. CROUCH (1887-???); Edward L. CROUCH (1889-???) who married Nadia L. PURYEAR; Dora E. CROUCH (1891-???) who married Thomas F. ALLRED Sr.; Grace A. CROUCH (1892-1960); Howard E. CROUCH (1898-1927) and Frederick M. CROUCH (1899-???).There may have been other children born after 1900.
7. Edward T. MACK married Mary MILSHAK (spelling?).Where did they live?
8. Emma M. MACK was born 1864 in North Carolina?;She married Joseph SMITH and had two known children Bessie and Sydney.Where did they live?
