I appreciate the efforts to separate the various names and their origins. Here's an origin for the name MACHEN which you may find interesting:
My ancestors of the name "deBesse" were French in origin and escaped execution during the French revolution by bribing a jailer and emigrating to Germany, then Holland. To prevent being found, Constantine deBesse forsook his family name and took a Germanic form of his wife's maiden name, MACAINE, transforming it into MACHEN.The family came to America in the 1840s and settled in the Toledo, Ohio area.
Would love to correspond with other kin.I use the MACHEN forum.
