Thank you for those tidbits re MacGs at the Sheriff's Court of Invernessshire. Much appreciated. Since my "theory" re the place known as "Vamy", I have finally found its exact location, first by contacting a museum in the area of Arisaig, Scotland; finding a reference to it in the internet magazine called "West Word"; and then doing an internet search with the info they provided. "The name "Vamy" is the anglicised form of "Mamaidh" which is a little glen and loch in west Inverness-shire, near Arisaig. i.e. Glean Mamaidh and Loch Mamaidh. The term "Vamy" has come about in the following manner. In Gaidhlig a person is asked "Co as a tha thu?" (English: "Where do you come from?") and the answer in Gaidhlig in this case, would be: "Tha mi as a Mhamaidh". (English: "I am from Mamaidh") The letter "h" added to "m" aspirates the word and makes a "v" sound therefore "Mhamaidh" (anglicised to "Vamy".) Mamaidh translates as "a breast shaped hill" I am afraid that my Gaidhlig is not good enough to give a proper grammatical explanation but this is how the Mhamaidhs came to be known as the Vamys. I myself come from Gleann Mamaidh, now known as, Glenmamie and my brother still lives in the old family home at the foot of the glen. There is a burn, or stream, which flows down from the loch and it is called "Allt a Mhamaidh". .....I have attached a Lochaber map for you. If you locate Lochailort and Arisaig, in between these two places, you will see a sea loch called Loch nan Uamh. A little north east of that loch is Loch Mamaidh although it is hardly visible on the map but Loch nan Uamh will place it for you as near as possible." (Courtesy of Elizabeth MacDonald of Arisaig, Scotland ealasaid6@btopenworld.com) Result of internet search: Glen Mama is a wide valley with high mountains alongside. Loch Mama is a terrific place to lunch on a warm day. Although quite an easy walk, you are advised to wear boots - some parts are boggy. The walk sets off from Glen Mama Farm near the main road and climbs through an ancient oak woodland, sadly now much thinner than in former times. The first few hundred yards are a joy for kids because the route crosses the river so many times on bridges, trees, fords and stones (those who don't want to play can stick to one bank - most of the time!) There is a steeper section with rapids and pools before the route crosses the burn again on stepping-stones, before arriving at Loch Mama. The A830(T) from Fort William to Mallaig runs past Glen Mama Farm on a new stretch of road. There is a small lay-by 100 metres west of the farm track on the north side of the road, or a gate with standing room for one car at one side on the south side, just about opposite the farm track. Please do not park in the track to the farm without seeking permission first. For those who want more - the route can be linked to the Arieniskill to Prince Charlie's Cave walk by following the side of the lochs heading east with a climb at the far end. (Those interested in this link will find it easier to come the other way). It can also link with the Glen Beasdale walk by crossing a ridge and returning via Glen Beasdale.
