i have found, on-line, a very old text of ancient lands in Scotland including Arisaig, Lochaber. The CLOSEST word akin to VAMY (MAMY or perhaps MAMAIDH which means Mummy or Mommy) thatI found refers to a place in the area called MAMOIR - understanding that the writer was writing before the year 1600 in very olde english, thus setting forth his interpretation of how the Gaelic word sounded to him. The information comes from "The Pont texts" which contain descriptive topographic information, derived from the recorded travels, writings, and maps of Timothy Pont (who died sometime between 1611 and 1614.) http://www.nls.uk/pont/texts/index.html The text and maps are held in the National Library of Scotland. In pertinent part, the actual place where MAMOIR can be found in Lochaber (Arisaig area) is described: "...The names of the wholl parts of the Lordship of Lochabyr, ar thess. MAMOIR, Loch-Levin or Lieven, Glennevish, Gargavach, Glen-spean, Glen- Roy, Daugh-nassie, Loch-Yiell, Glenley or Glenluy, Loch-Airkag, Achadrome and Glengarry. All thir parts ar devyded among the paroche churches viz: Ardgowr in the Lordship of Morverne and Sherifdome of Innerness. Loch-yiell, Glenley, Loch-Arkaig, Achadrome, and Glengarry perteyne to the paroche of Kilmaille. Loch-Lieven, MAMOIR and the seaven merk land and half merk land of Glen-nevish perteyne to Iland Mowne. - Pg.87v-88r "......Lochabyr, Arisaick, Murrours, Knoydeor and Glen-Elg on the north. Ther wer auncient bishops of the race and name of CLAN-VICK-GILLEMICHAELL. After them succeeded uthirs of uther races, wherof one being about to putt of sum gentlemen from offices whiche they and thair predecessors had held long of the Bishops, wer killed be the said CLAN-VICK-GILLE-MICHAELL. ..." NOTE: I suspect that this "Clan" is MacGill...ivray, but it sounds like Mic hael to the writer. The reason I suspect this is that the spelling of other clans are also "corrupted" - you have to read them several times to figure out who he is referring to. Down further on the same page, you find exactly where MAMOIR is located: "MAMOIR is a cowntrey of Lochabyr, it hath Lochlieven upon one syd, the long bay of Lochyell upon another syd, then the river Nevesh and upon the last syd ar the hills, looking the way to Rennach far of, and all betuix wast grownd taken up with hills mossis and deserts."
