McFall changed to MacFall

My great aunt, Mary Katharine McFall, 2 Jan 1860-30 June 1947, changed the family name from McFall to MacFall when she was seeking a job as a school teacher in New York City. Evidently they were not hiring Roman Catholics and she, a Presbyterian whose ancesters came from Belfast, did not want to be assumed to be Catholic as her name certainly gave that impression. From that time on our family was MacFall, even though our original American ancestor was Francis McFall who came to Bedminster Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1727. Joan MacFall Hays
