Ilija & Mihailo TASEVSKI - KIFTE - LOUIS - LEWIS
Posted by: Michele Jurlina (ID *****5921) Date: January 09, 2008 at 08:16:57

I don't know if anyone can help, but we know that my grandfather Michael b.1892, and his father Ilija or Ilya came through Ellis I several times.

The main problem is the names. The family patriarchal surname was probably something like Kifte / Kivtay ... in 1900. When the laws changed and "froze" people's surnames in Macedonia, the surname was Tasevski, but this would have been after their first arrival. Also, my grandfather told my mother that they used the name "Lewis" or "Louis" in the US, and that everyone called him "Mike".

The first time at Ellis I was c.1900, when Michael was 8yo. He went back and forth and then was married at 17yo, and had a young wife (?Florina or Florentina - may have been her sister's name) from Macedonia. They had 3 daughters in the US. The eldest, Evda, dying at 13yo and his wife died very young.

He took his 2 daughters, Menka & Alenka, back to Macedonia c.1919, to be raised by his mother, Sofia. He had 4 more "Tasevski" children: Stefan,Olga, Alexo & Velian, before emigrating to Australia c.1926. In Australia, where he went by the name of Michael Tasik, he married my grandmother and had 3 more children, Marilyn, Christopher and Joanne (the last at age 61).

I have looked up every combination of names I can think of, but I cannot find any record on the Ellis I on-line searches with my meagre data.

They came from Dragos(h) Macedonia, near the Greek border, so may have sailed from Greece, Albania, Croatia... who knows.

My grandfather said his father had businesses in Detroit and Chicago and it was opposite Henry Ford's gates. He also said his father took back the equivalent of 3,000 gold napoleons to Macedonia, where he built a factory. This has been confirmed by other older Australian immigrants from Dragosh.

Mike was a big, strong lad, and told my mother (his daughter) by 16yo he was earning money as a wrestler. Working on the railways, I believe as an Engine Driver or crewman, he told my mother that he had accidently killed a black man in a fight, which is why he left suddenly and returned to Macedonia.

Alenka and her descendants live in Canada, and all the other children in Australia.

If there is anyone who can help me research the family's time in the US, I would really appreciate it.
