I finally received my grandfather's Declaration of Intent from North Dakota. I see now that he was not only born in Patele, Macedonia, but it was also his last foreign address. So he was Macedonian. He came to America in 1914 at eighteen years of age out of a port called Le Havre, France on the Olympia. There were no names of parents listed on it. My mom says he came here to escape and that his father's name was Evan Yaroff. The part of Macedonia he was from is now Northern Greece. It is to the left of Florina, near a small lake. The village is perched up above a very small lake. Today the village is called Agios Pantelemon.
