I'm so happy to find someone searching out the same mystery I am. I hope I have some info to help and vice versa. I have included below some messages I posted on ancestry.com.

After looking at census records, I believe that Elizabeth and Emsey are two different wives of Wiley. The 1860 census clearly shows Elizabeth alone with children Nancy, Martha and Adam while Wiley and Emsey are together with much younger children in the same county. I think he left Elizabeth sometime in the 1850's and remarried. Please let me know if you have evidence of the contrary.

Willis Mace is listed in the 1850 Yancey County, North Carolina Census as Wiley Mace. He is in the house hold of his older brother, Newsome Mace. Wiley is listed as 32 years old and being a farmer.
Wiley Mace, household 1298, is listed in the 1860 Yancey County, North Carolina Census as being 45 years old, children, Sarah J., 9, Newsom A., 5, Cecelia N., 2, and Matilda, 1. Emzey Mace is his brother Newsome's daughter who shows up as 26 years old. [Danny A. McBee, April 11, 1994).
Wiley Mace, 70, laborer, born in North Carolina, is listed as head of household 13/13, page
171B, in the 1880 Township 10, Reems Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina Census with wife Emsey E., 47, children Tilda, 21, Washington, 14, Mary Elisabeth, 9, Martha D., 6, Alta L., 3, and grandchildren Docia Vina, 5, and Rhodasida, 2. [Danny A. McBee, September 28, 2004].

I am sure this Elizabeth is the Betty Hoppes who married Wiley Mace because her parents are living next door.
The Emsey with Wiley is not his neice. Newsome's daughter also named Emzey is listed in the 1860 Yancey census as age 15 and living in her parents home. I have seen Emsey Elizabeth Mace referred to often but I believe these census records indicate clearly that they are two separate women. Any input or info anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Yancey does not have marriage or divorce records going back to the 1850's so I can not prove my opinion.

I don't have exact dates on Wiley or Elizabeth other than death after 1880. I happen to be going to Bear Creek Cem this Sunday where Adam and Nancy are buried. I will be visting with an elderly little lady that may be able to help?
I can't find Elizabeth or son Adam in 1870. I noticed you didn't have Wiley in 1880 but I did find him.
