My own Donald MacDonald of Inverness Shire (who was of the hamlet of Culnakirk) conformed to the Scottish naming tradition. He named his eldest son after his father, Duncan MacDonald. His next son, he dutifully named after his wife's father. His eldest daughter he named after his own mother, Chrisitan (MacKintosh). The second daughter was named after his wife's mother and the third daughter was named after his wife as the third son should have been named after himself. The first son could have been named after either grandfather;likewise, the eldest daughter could have been named after either grandmother.

Have you checked parish records?I have found them very helpful.
