Ray:I found your story fascinating regarding the connection between the McDearmids and the Campbells of Skye.
Do you have any idea if the Scottish McDearmids are in any way connected with the Irish McDermotts?I have been told that McDearmid is one of the various spellings of McDermott.I believe that some of the Scotch did settle in Ireland a long time ago.
The reason I ask is:My grandfather John McDermott who was born in Florida was raised by Christian Gillis Campbell and his sister Mary Annie McDermott was raised by Christian's sister, Katherine Gillis McLean.
My grandfather always told his children that he was Scotch-Irish.In trying to trace his ancestry, I have traced the Gillis, McLean and Campbell families from Walton Co., Florida back to the Isle of Skye, Scotland.I have at this point not found a blood connection to any of these three families.
I did find my great grandfather was either Bryant or Bryan McDermitt or McDermott. He listed his place of birth as Ireland.
The story in the family is that my grandfather's father and his sister were orphans and emmigrated to the U.S. due to the potato famine in Ireland. This would be between 1841 and about 1850.
The closest name that I have found on passenger lists of ships carrying Irish immigrants during this time is a Bryan McDermott age 40 who was traveling with a Honora McDermott age 15.They left from the Port of Sligo, Irland. The only real record that I have found on my great grandfather is the 1870 census of Washington Co., Florida. His age is listed as 66 which would make him born in about 1804.The Bryan McDermott who was a passenger on the Bark Cuba in May 1847 would have a birthday of about 1807.
I have always wondered why the Campbells, Gillis, and McLean families took in my grandfather and his sister when they were orphaned. The only thing my mother and her siblings knew was that they were friends of their father's parents.
If the McDearmids of Skye are in any way connected to the McDermotts of Ireland, this might explain the connection between the families.
Any help or information would be appreciated.
