I have a lot of conections between my McCarthys of Cloyne parish (Churchtown) and my Barrys of Midleton, Cork. For example, there was my Patrick McCarthy Barry who may have been the godfather at the Cloyne christening of Thomas Francis McCarthy in 1882. Patrick was born 1852, Midleton, Cork and was the brother of my g/grandfather Garret Barry b.1854. I have recently received a transcription of a gravestone in the Holy Rosary Church, Midleton, from a wonderful lady called Mairead, which indicates that my gx2 uncle Patrick David Barry aka Patrick McCarthy Barry, b.1852 in Midleton probably lived until 1925 and by then was (probably) known as Patrick McCarthy Barry. He like his father before him, was a shoemaker living and working at 51 Main St, Midleton. His mother was Kate McCarthy b.1818 and her family (father, John McCarthy, mother Elizabeth Barry (sic), sister Johanna b.1808, brothers David b.1810, Garrett b.1812 that I know of) seems, from baptismal documents, to have been from Churchtown, Cloyne Parish. There seems to have been a strong connection between the McCarthys of Churchtown, Cloyne Parish and my Midleton Barrys. So it is entirely possible that Patrick McCarthy Barry b.1852, was godfather to Thomas Francis McCarthy in 1882 when he would have been 30. Also, from the above inscription, Patrick McCarthy Barry b.1852, was married to Johanna – I know from the 1843 Midleton parish census, that he had an aunt, Johanna McCarthy, b,1808 in Churchtown, Cloyne and I wouldn’t be surprised if his wife Johanna b.1851, d.1908, was another McCarthy. My G/grandfather, as I said above was Garrett Barry and he had an uncle Garrett McCarthy from Churchtown, Cloyne. These are only some of the McCarthy/Barry links – others include sponsoring baptisms etc. I would appreciate hearing if anybody can relate to any of these Cloyne McCarthys and Midleton Barrys. Many thanks, Don Barry Notify Administrator about this message?
