I have been doing some research on a Joe McCollum of Paris,Lamar Co. Texas. I do research on the Neal family of Paris, Lamar Co.Texas and Joe McCollums name has come up in my research as being connected. But I have found no connection at this time. My grandmother died in 1990 and her bible has some family info about her and my grandfather John Cecil Neal. He was born April 21, 1891 in Ark. and is found on the 1900 census of Lamar Co. Texas with his father, James W. Neal and siblings. His mother supposedly has died by now. He and his siblings were put in an orphanage about 1905 and by 1910 are out again. In my grandmothers bible is written "for more info on John Cecil Neal, contact Joe McCollums son(lawyer in Paris, Texas) , He raised him for many years". The only Joe McCollum I have found is on 1910 census Lamar Co. Texas as Joe B. McCollum b. ca 1876 Ala , with his wife Ethel b.ca.1883 Ky. They have children: Mattie b.ca 1903, Leila b. 1905; Buelah b. ca 1907; Edith b.ca.1910 . They are listed as "white" on this census. They are found in 1920 Lamar Co. Texas ..... Joe McCollum, his wife Ethel, children--- Mattie, Lela , Beulah, Edith. J. B.; James. This time the family is listed as "Black". I have also found this Joe McCollum in 1900 Collin Co. Texas , b.December 1876 Ala living with Will A. Edwards. He is listed as white here. His wife was Ethel Edwards. There is probably a connection there. I have tried to gain some info from the family in Paris, Texas but to no avail. Some one knew this name to write it in the bible but no one knows anything about it. If this is the Joe McCollum you are looking for, I will be glad to give you what info I have found. Please feel free to contact me by email at kgid@mail.pernet.net.
