HUSBAND NOTES: Pierre Francois MACCABEE Lajeunesse Marin AKA(2,3):
AKA(4): General(5,6,7,8,9): First among our North American ancestors, Pierre-Francois
Maccabee, a soldier of the Guyenne Regiment, was born in Franche ComtÚ not far from the
Swiss border north of the Rhone Alps. In a "fichier origine" [original document] he is listed as
an immigrant born in Burgille, Doubs. Other sources indicate he was born in the Parish of Burgi
[Burgille], Diocese of Besancon. In 2001, Burgille's population was below 200. Archives for
small communities would have been sent to Besancon, "archives departementales du Doubs.
While researching the family history we have found a wide variation in the spelling of the
surname including: MACCABEE,MACCHABE, MACCHABE MARIN, MACHABEE, and
MACCHABE dit LA JEUNESSE MARIN. Pierre's "dit" name or nickname translates to
Maccabee the young sailor. (According to the researcher, Ghislaine Machabee, he was baptised
Pierre-Antoine on 4 May 1732. We believe it is more likely that Pierre Antoine was Pierre
Francois brother. The records for Burgille le Marnay are missing from the Bescancon archives
for 1734 so the accuracy of the estimated date of birth could not be checked.)
As a soldier of the Royal French Army's Compagnie Cormier Regiment de Guyenne,
Pierre-Francois set sail from the port of Brest on 3 May 1755 aboard the vessel l'Illustre one of
General Montcalm`s convoy of nine ships and landed on 23 June 1755. The RÚgiment de
Guyenne was deployed in New France and the Mississippi River Valley during the French and
Indian War. In June 1756, the Regiment, which had been encamped in Fort Frontenac, laid siege
to Fort Chouaguen [Fort Oswego]. Earlier that same year, 23 Jan 1756 in Longue-Pointe, Ile de
Montreal, Quebec, New France Pierre-Francoise Macchabe and Marie-Catherine Archambeault
Dufresne witnessed the baptism by the missionary/priest Reverchon of a foundling, born that day,
left on the doorsteps of the church. The child was given the name Pierre-Franþois. The mother
and father are listed as "inconnus" (unknown]. Three days later, Jan 26, twenty-two year-old
Pierre Francois witnessed the burial of Charles & Elizabeth [Larche] Normand's child in Longue
In 1758, the young soldier Pierre Francois Macchabe, Marin in the Regiment "De Guyenne
Compagnie de LeCormier" originally from the Parish of Burgi, Diocese of Besancon, married
Marie Catherine Simon in Longue Point . Church records indicate the couple's parents were
Jean-Francois Macchabe & Jeanne Francoise Tournon and Louis Simon Leonard & Marie Behic.
Witnesses included: Jean Baptiste Blain, Chief Surgeon of the Regiment of Guyenne, Pierre
Petjat, Sergeant, Jean Archambault, Toussaint Pepin and Reverchon, missionary/priest. The
20-year-old bride had all of the necessary "permissions" to wed.
Two years after the signing of the Treaty of Paris that brought an end to Seven Years' War and
victory to the British, the 1765 Quebec Census indicates the household of Francois Maccabe in
Lachine consisted of 1 daughter, 2 sons under 15 years of age and a wife. Of their nine children,
six died. The infant Francois died 1 1/2 months after his birth. No documentation other than the
baptism has been found for Pierre Amable. It is possible he did not survive his first year. Marie
Catherine died in February 1768 shortly after the birth of twin sons.
During their 10 year marriage, the couple lived through the 1758 winter famine; the 1759
surrender of Quebec City to the English after the battle of the Plains of Abraham; attempts by
French troops to retake Quebec in 1760, the closure of all Jesuit Colleges by the Parliament of
Paris resulting in the expulsion of the Jesuits, the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ceded Canda to the
British and the devastation of more than one hundred Montreal homes in the fire of 1765.
Pierre's mother Jeanne Francoise Tournou [AKA Tournois] died prior to his second marriage in
1769 as did both of the parents Louis Charbonnot & Josephe Langevin of his new bride,
Marguerite Charbonnot, resident of Lachine, a native of St.-Laurent. Four of the couple's six
children died in infancy; no records were found for Marie Catherine following her baptism.
Marguerite died at 35 years old following the birth of her sixth child.
During the course of their marriage, the Jesuit order of 22,000 was abolished in Canada in 1773;
May 22, 1794, the Bishop of Quebec, Jean Oliver Briand, ordered French loyalty to Britain and
forbade Canadian women to marry American soldiers. The Philadephia Congress, stated that the
Quebec Act was: "That worst of laws, which supported a Catholic Religion that spread impiety,
bigotry, persecution, murder and rebellion throughout every part of the world." Four days later,
the same Congress passed an address encouraging Quebec inhabitants to form a union of liberty
and brotherhood. Workhouses that eventually evolved into poor houses were established for
women and children. The Quebec Act of 1774 guaranteed the French population of 60,000 their
basic rights. In 1775, an American described rural French Quebecois as "very stupid, not one to
four hundred that could read one word, but were very precise in saying their prayers, counting
their beads and crossing themselves." In October 1776, three months after the death of
Marguerite, Pierre Francois, married Catherine Scayanifs, resident of Lachine, daughter of Andre
Scayanifs Landroche and Anne Parent, deceased. By 1793, Catherine had given birth to her ninth
In the last four years of Pierre's life, a slave cemetery was established at Saint Armand Station,
Quebec (1790); three years later, the importation of slaves was prohibited but slavery was not
abolished until 1804 1811 in Upper Canada. Most children born into slavery in Upper Canada
died before reaching 25 the promised age of freedom. In 1794, Lyonnaise Sulpician
Seminarians, exiled by the French Revolution, immigrated to Montreal. It is believed Pierre
Francois died that year and that the record of death bearing the name of Lambert Maccabe, age
55, dated 16 Aug 1794 in Sainte-Therese, Ile de Montreal was actually the record of for 60
year-old Pierre. In the 39 years between his fist marriage and his death, Pierre Francois sired 27
