Extracts from The Clan Campbell Abstracts (1913) by Sir Duncan Campbell of Balcaldine and Glenure: 1755, March 28th.— Contract of Marriage, dated at Daill in Craignish 5th December 1750, between Lieutenant Archibald Campbell, of General Bland’s regiment of dragoons, and Jean Campbell, sister german to James Campbell of Craignish, with consent of her said brother. They are already married, but only a minute of contract made. She is provided to £150 sterling by her father, the deceased Dugald Campbell of Craignish, in full of all she can claim of him, or of the deceased Sir James Smollett of Bonhill, her grandfather. The witnesses are John Campbell, uncle to Craignish, Lieutenant Colin Campbell, brother to Cruachan, Ferquhard Campbell of Laganlochan, and Dugald Campbell, brother to Craignish. [Note: Dougald Campbell of Craignish (son and heir of Dugald Campbell of Craignish, d1716), m. (1718) Eleanor Smollett, second daughter of Sir James Smollett of Bonhill, Kt.; and also first cousin to Archibald McAulay of Ardincaple]. 1759, September 13th.— Bond by James Campbell of Craignish, eldest lawful son and heir of the deceased Dugald Campbell of Craignish, narrating that Margaret Campbell, his grandmother, widow of the deceased George Campbell of Craignish, his grandfather, has renounced in his favour her liferent lands of Daill, Barichbyan and others, to which she was provided in terms of her Contract of Marriage, dated 14th April 1693; and he promises to maintain her and her servants, and furnish her with a riding horse for going abroad, etc.; dated at Daill 29th May 1749; witnesses, Archibald Campbell of Innerliver, John Campbell in Fewril, “my uncle,” etc. (p242-43) 1762, July 30th.— Bond of Provision by James Campbell of Craignish narrating that it was agreed between him and Archibald Campbell of Barbeck, prior to his marriage with the deceased Mary Campbell, daughter to the said Archibald, that upon the latter’s paying to him £400 sterling as tocher with his daughter he would grant Bonds of Provision to their children; so now he promises to pay to the children so procreated between him and the said Mary Campbell, his late spouse, viz. :— to Smollet Campbell, his eldest son, £400 sterling, George Campbell, his youngest son, £200 sterling, and to Jean Campbell, his only daughter of the said marriage, £200 sterling, etc.; dated at Inveraray 23rd April 1762. (p247-48). 1773, May 18th.— Heretable Bond by James Campbell of Craignish to Mr. Archibald M’Neill, minister at Lemnamuich, for £700 sterling, with security, dated at Castle Craignish 12th December 1768; witnesses, Patrick Campbell, son to James Campbell of Rudill, etc. (p263) 1777, July 31st.— Bond of Annuity by James Campbell of Craignish to Helenora Campbell, his lawful daughter, of the sum of £30 sterling if she remain in family with the heir apparent [not mentioned], conform to his Bond of Provision, dated 21st October 1754; and mentioning Alexander Campbell, his uncle, and some others, with whose consent and his own she is to marry; dated at Pennycastle 24th April 1775. (p267) 1777, July 31st.— Bond of Annuity by James Campbell of Craignish to his youngest lawful daughter, Jean Campbell, of £20 sterling, or £10 sterling if she remain in family with the heir apparent, and this annuity to cease on her marriage, when she may claim £200 sterling of provision, conform to his former Bond of Provision in her favour; dated as above, and witnessed by Lieutenant Dugald Campbell, his apparent heir. (p267) 1781, March 23rd.— Factory and Commission by Lieutenant Colonel John Campbell of Barbeck and Donald Campbell of Dunstafnage, Dugald Campbell of Kilmartin, Dugald Campbell of Ederline, and Donald Campbell of Sonnachan, trustees on the estate of Dugald Campbell of Craignish conform to Trust Disposition of 8th September last, appointing Alexander Campbell, son of John Campbell, tacksman of Aird Craignish, factor of the said estate, for uplifting rents, etc., and acting as baron bailie; dated at Penicastle 17th December 1780; witnesses, Alexander Campbell of Raschoillie, etc. (p 271) 1781, November 7th.— Bond by Smollet Campbell, Lieutenant in the 71st regiment of foot, to Duncan Campbell, writer in Inveraray, for £400 sterling, with Assignation in security thereof of a Bond of Provision by the deceased James Campbell of Craignish of £400 in favour of the said Smollet Campbell, his son, dated 3rd April 1762; witnesses, Major James Campbell of the West Fencible regiment, and Captain Alexander Campbell of the 74th regiment. [Note: Among the casualties in the operations before Savannah, in Georgia (1779), reportedly included Lt. Smollet Campbell, 2nd Battalion, 71st Regiment (Fraser’s Highlanders) and Lieutenant of Dragoons, wounded on 9th October. The Scots Magazine (1779), vol 41, p680; the 71st Regiment was among the British forces present at Cornwallis’ surrender at Yorktown, 17th October 1781]. 1781, November 12th.— Factory by Lieutenant-Colonel John Campbell of Barbeck, who is going abroad on military service, appointing Archibald Campbell at Esdale, late Lieutenant in the Fencible regiment of Argyleshire, to uplift sums due him, and also an annuity of £100 sterling, provided to him by the deceased Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochnell, Baronet, his uncle, and to deal with his estate; dated at Edinburgh 17th March 1778.
