Very interested in your e-mail as Norman Macleod's son, Donald Macleod may be my great grandfather who was born 1846/1847 in Lackalee or surrounding area and married a Margaret Ferguson in Lackalee in 1883.However, I have been unable to trace details of his birth online.Try contacting Bill Lawson at the Seallam Centre www.seallam.com who has amazing genealogical records going back 6 generations. From my knowledge of the area, the residents of Lackalee were cleared from the Machair in Harris in the early 1800s by the Factor, Donald Stewart after the land was sold by William Macleod of Bernaray. The Machair land was fertile and whereas Lackalee and the eastern lochs were only useful for collecting kelp. The Macleods of Bernaray owned Bernaray, Taransay and the Machair in West Harris since the 15th chief of Clan Macleod Ruraidh Mor Macleod granted the land to his 3rd son Norman Macleod in the 16th century.I've been trying to find a link with the Macleods of Lackalee (many of whose decendants now reside in Luskentyre in the Machair) to the Macleods of Bernaray but without success so far.
