This is the origin as far as I have got of 'my' John MacAskill from Berneray:
Murdo MacAskill, b. c 1760-1770.The only Murdo MacAskill on Berneray in 1819 was sharing a croft at Rusigarry with Roderick MacAskill. It is likely that they were brothers sharing their father's croft, but there is no actual proof.
Roderick married and had three daughters, Mary (unmarried), Kirsty married in Stornoway, Betsy married John MacKinnon on Berneray (BL).
Murdo married Catherine Shaw.Catherine:Bill Lawson states that Catherine descended from Domhnall Iomhair (Donald son of Ivor) who came to Berneray as a tacksman to Donald MacDonald after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.He had a son Ivor who was probably Catherine's father.
I. John MacAskill, b. c 1796 in Berneray, Harris, d. 01.01.1884 in Meavaig, Harris, INV, (see note 1) occupation farmer/crofter/shoemaker.In 1841 the family was at Borve. John (45), Catherine (45), Murdo (20), Chirsty (15), Catherine (13), Malcolm (11), Neil (8m). Part of the township of Borve was cleared in 1846 to make a sheep farm, and the remainer in 1854. The MacAskill family were among the earlier group to be cleared, but were able to obtain half of a croft in the township of Diraclett , Harris. John appears in Borve as a tentant in 1830. (B.L.).
