I must apologize for a tardy response.
I one thought I was related to Duncan McArthur (Gov.) because so many things fit but there was no paper trail. I have a firm DNA connection with what I refer to as the Mormon McArthurs. This Group ( a group of one, if you will) came from Glen Lyon as John McArthur, born 1742 in Glen Lyon. His father, Robert McArthur was born 1710 in Glen Lyon.
I relented in my efforts to link with the family of Duncan McArthur when an acquaintance who is a descendant of Duncan (Gov) tested his DNA and no link was shown to my line. In fact so far he has shown no link to any other McArthurs that I am aware of. Duncan's family also came from Glen Lyon.
I visited Glen Lyon last year. It is a lovely very isolated valley in the central highlands that is open on one end, Fortingall being the entry point into the valley. AS near as I can tell there are no McArthurs in the glen at the current time and few inhabitants at all. I met an elderly Stewart there who seemed to be knowledgeable of the area and he seemed to recall hearing the name in the area but wasn't sure where he heard it.
I do not understand why more people do not invest in a DNA test. It can certainly lead to a significant breakthrough. Without it I would still be stuck at 1812 rather than 1710.
There are some ancestral trees in the internet that link my John McArthur with the "other" McArthurs from Glen Lyon but there are leaps of faith there that simply hold up to reason.
I did find on memorial in the middle of Glen Lyon that paid tribute to soldiers lost during WW I. One of the names was John (I think, I would have to look it up) McArthur. Perhaps I should run it down.
I have some other information of the area and McArthurs. No bomb shells but could help some people.
And yes, I was also told I was related to General McArthur just like every other McArthur I have ever met. My father was born McArthur but the army changed the spelling to MacArthur (or so he told me)
Cheers,
Walter MacArthur
