Thanks for the info, especially the location of Mary in 1860. It's interesting that her name is given as Mabb in 1860 while the surname of the other children is Brooks. There is a bit more to the story.
I'm working with a team of volunteers on the Circuit Court records in Hawkins County and we recently discovered a divorce case in which a Mary Brooks is divorcing a William Brooks 8 Sep 1849 in which she says "the said Brooks has been guilty of repeated acts of adultery with one Franky Maabe by whom he has had several children". According to the presentment, William and Mary were married in 1846 but only lived together a short time before William "drove her from his house" and she went to live with her mother.
The evidence to date suggests that Franky was a Mabe and that she and William were having children long before they were married in 1857. One child, Annis, is my ggrandmother and it is known through family sources that her name was Brooks when she married and her death certificate lists her father as William Brooks and mother as "Mabib", thus continuing the confusion over the many variations of the Mabe name. Incidentally, Annis was born 4 Apr 1847 which agrees with the 1850 and 1860 reports. By 1870 William and Franky/Frances were living in Hancock Co.
I agree that David Mabe could not have been the son of Reuben but Franky could have been the daughter of either.
