My grandmother looked the same. When I was young she told me that her mother swore her the secrecy about that fact that her father was half Indian. I don't know if that was true or not, but her father James Paxton was the grandchild of Levi Mallett and Elizabeth Minor who were both listed as Mulatto in the 1860 census.
