Seems to me (I have some evidence)that MABBS either originated from or became exchangeable for MABS, MABB and probably MABBE and even MAB. My MABBS line which basically London in/after 1700's traces to Thomas Mabbs (m Elizabeth) in 1698 with children christened Bosham 1700 -1706. There were at that time some families of MABB and MABBE at Donnington, Sidlesham. Found MABB MABBE and one MABBS family in Eastbourne in mid 1500s. If can take all these families as cross related then name established in mid/late 1500's along along South Coast westward to Selsey area with early branches striking inland to Kent (Ticehurst)e.g.

buried Burpham
John MABBE Jone (son of Nichol)1572, Doratie MAB 1588,

Hamsey (nr Lewes): Nicholas MABBE took up
30 acres near Selmeston 1563

Selsey penisula (leases at Rumboldswyke/ Chichester/Selsey/Felpham/Wittering)
John MABBE 1593, ? MABB 1600, Agnes widow of John MABBE 1604, Francis MABB 1628, MABBE 1634, William MABB 1650/53, William MABB 1684, John MABB 1700 (his son was John MABBS 1756 and grandson John MABBS 1764 - latter was a Selsey fisherman who leased out 2 acres), Israel MABB(S)1727, Joan MABBS (w of John) 1764 - NB all these dates are of land transactions by adults

1841 Chichester census suggests 3 MABBS families in town: James (70) baker, Anna (60) North St /James (30) baker West Gate, William (25) baker, Thomas (30)journeyman carpenter Council House Lane with Sarah (30)Fanny (6) Mary (4) Ellen (2) Frank 5 mos/Sarah (20) Washington Street Francis (1),
strangely did not find any Mabbs 1861/71/91

crew lists south coast ships
Frank MABBS b c 1841 Bridport
George MAbb b c 1841 Littlehampton

I have further MABBS etc. info (but not much time)and if knew your points of focus might be able to assist
