R M Bailey Jr artist living in Boston, MA in 1878
I have recently obtained an old oil painting - a landscape titled "Sketch of Echo Lake" by an artist named R.M. Bailey Jr. This painting is dated '78. The label on the back of the painting reads "Works for the Fine-Arts Dept. of the Thirteenth Exhibition of the Massachussets Charitable Mechanics Association. R. M. Bailey Jr, 37 Chester Square, Boston MA."
Doing a little online research I have found out that the 1st Exhibition by this group [which was founded in 1795 by Paul Revere] occurred in Boston in 1837. Their 8th exhibition was held in 1856 in Boston. This painting was done for the Thirteenth exhibition which must have been held sometime between 1878 [date of painting] and 1882. The Fifteenth exhibition took place in 1884. The next exhibition I can find a record of was the 17th Exhibition which was held in 1890.
I am trying to learn more about this artist. Can anyone claim him as an ancestor? Could he possibly be the Robert Morris Bailey [1849-1936] who was a famous Dedham architect and landscape artist? Note that he signed the painting with the "Jr" after his name.
Any and all help would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks.
Mary Lou
P.S. My mother-in-law bought the painting at a household sale here in Bradford Co, PA. She believes there used to be a Bailey family living in LeRaysville, Bradford Co, PA and that may be the origins of the painting.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
