One of the most significant of the early Plymouth Co. Holmes families is that of John Holmes, messenger of the Plymouth Court, so you might check the standard reference on that family:
Eugene A. Stratton, "Descendants of Mr. John Holmes, Messenger of the Plymouth Court" (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, 74 (1986):83-110 [Correction 75:215], 203-223 [Correction 75:215] [Additions 77:143-144]).
