I live less than a mile from the Middleboro/Middleborough, Plymouth County line - in another historic town, Bridgewater. Officially, the name is still Middleborough (check any town web sites, the public school system, etc.) but the name is often shortened to Middleboro.
(www.middleboro.k12.ma.us/)is the school system's web site.

So, both spellings are used, according to what or who you are looking for. Even on some official sites you will occassionally see Middleboro, (although in most instances they have spelled it Middleborough).

For purposes of research, I would stick to Middleborough.
