JOB SIMMONS MASSACHUSETTS (BILLI PETTS RESEARCH) Job Simmons Jr. and Elizabeth Howland were married 25 May 1761 in Middleborough, MA. Worcester County deed recorded 5 Nov 1770, it states, " I Job Simmons of MIDDLEBOROUGH in the County of PLYMOUTH and province of Massachusetts Bay in New England , yeoman, for and in consideration of the sum of 62 pounds, 10 shillings...paid by John Howland, Jun, of Middleborough, aforesaid yeoman, do convey and confirm one tract or parcel of land being in Spencer in the County of Worcester...containing 140 acres by measure..and is the northerly part of Lott 57 ...in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this fifth day of November 1770." Signed Job Simmons, JUN. Recorded Nov 7, 1770. Witnesses: Levi Pierce, John Southgate" This is good information, too, because Middleborough and Freetown were practically interchangeable. As we already know, Job Simmons, Jr, and Elizabeth Howland were recorded as being married in both Middleborough and Freetown and he was referred to as "Job Simmons of Freetown" in other sources. I Francis Stone of New Braintree in the County of Worcester..gentleman...for and in consideration of the sum ...duly paid by Job Simmons of Brookfield, yeoman, ...convey...five acres of land in Brookfield bounded Northerly by the aforesaid Simmons land..on this fifth day of Feb 1780.... Interestingly enough, all of the players in this transaction are subjects of our research: The deed was witnessed by Job Simmons, Jeremiah Simmons, Job Simmons... and Jonathan Lackey. Note: It was witnessed by TWO Job Simmonses, likely father and son. It was signed by both Abraham Lackey and wife, Mary. The buyer, John Howland, was the brother of Job Simmons' wife, Elizabeth Howland. 1800 Census Brookfield Worcester MA p. 18 ancestry.com Job Sammond 1 male 10-15 1 male 45 and over 1 female 10-15 1 female 16-25 1 female 45 and over 1810 Census Brookfield Worcester MA p.13 ancestry.com Job Symmons 1 male 45 and over 1 female 45 and over JOB SIMMONS SON JEREMIAH SIMMONS MASSACHUSETTS BORN 1775-1784? MA Married Molly Bemis in Spencer on Dec. 10, 1797 ( Vital Records of Spencer ) The family owned land in Worcester County. MERCY SIMMONS of Brookfield, MA, married Jonathan Lackey of Spencer, MA, on Dec. 10, 1797, in Spencer. On that same day, her brother, JEREMIAH SIMMONS of Brookfield, married Molly Bemis of Spencer. Jonathan Lackey was the son of Abraham and Mary Lackey of Spencer, Worcester, MA. I think it is likely that Mercy Simmons and Jeremiah Simmons of Brookfield were the children of JOB SIMMONS of Brookfield. Job Simmons was originally from Freetown, MA. According to the book, A History of Brookfield, MA, "Job Simmons of Freetown, Massachusetts, bought land in Brookfield in 1773." In the federal census of 1790, Brookfield, MA, Job Simmons was enumerated with a household consisting of 3 males over 16; 2 males under 16; and 5 females. The only other Simmons household in Brookfield consisted of Seth Simmons, one young male and one female. In my search for the parents of Mercy Simmons and Jeremiah Simmons, I came across the following deed witnessed on Feb. 18, 1800( LDS microfilm ): "I John Howland of Spencer, in the County of Worcester, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in consideration of seven hundred dollars paid to me by one Abraham Lackey of the county of Worcester... do hereby give grant bargain and convey to Abraham Lackey and his heirs and assign a certain lot lying and being in the town of Hancock in the County of Addsion and Sate of Vermont.........." This document was signed by John Howland and his wife, Rachel, of Spencer. It completed a land transaction in which John Howland sold a tract of land in Hancock, Addison County, VT, to Abraham Lackey. This transaction was witnessed by JOB SIMMONS, JEREMIAH SIMMONS, and Jonathan Lackey. Obviously, Job Simmons was connected to Jeremiah Simmons and Jonathan Lackey. It turned out that he was also connected to John Howland: Further research in a book called," A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland and Their Descendants, written by Franklyn Howland in 1885, revealed that John Howland's sister, ELIZABETH HOWLAND, born about 1742 in Freetown or Middleboro,MA, "married JOB SIMMONS of Freetown." Since this was the same Job Simmons "of Freetown" who bought land in Brookfield in 1773 and was the only Simmons head enumerated there in 1790 with a large family, I strongly believe that the parents of my Jeremiah Simmons and Mercy Simmons of Brookfield were Job Simmons and Elizabeth Howland. By 1800, Jonathan Lackey and wife, Mercy Simmons, and Jeremiah Simmons and wife, Molly Bemis, had moved to Hancock, Addison County, VT, along with Abraham Lackey, his wife, Mary, and several of his daughters. ( federal census ) According to the town minutes of the town of Hancock, Abraham Lackey, Jonathan Lackey, and Jeremiah Simmons were admitted as freeman in a meeting in Hancock in Sept. 1801. ( LDS microfilm ) In addition, the deeds of Addison County show several other land transactions involving these men in the early 1800's. In 1806, Jonathan Lackey sold all of his land in Addison County, VT, to William Lamb and left VT. The 1810 federal census places him and wife, Mercy Simmons, in Ticonderoga, Essex, NY; Jeremiah Simmons and Molly Bemis in Middlebury, Addison County, VT; and Abraham Lackey and family still in Hancock, Addison County, VT. The 1810 census indicates that Jonathan Lackey and Mercy Simmons had six children, four boys and two girls, while Jeremiah Simmons and Molly Bemis had five children...four boys and one girl. It is possible that these children, born between 1798 and 1810, may have been named after their forebears, ie, Job,Jeremiah, etc. Since Job Simmons and Elizabeth Howland were from Freetown, MA, I looked for Job's parents there. ( Elizabeth Howland's line is well documented back to Henry Howland, the brother of Mayflower Pilgrim, John Howland )The Simmons line was well established in Freetown, MA. Job Simmons was born( supposedly )about 1735 in Freetown. Looking at the birthdates already mentioned above, it is possible to narrow down the possibilities for Job Simmons's father to Nathan Simmons, 1709, Job Simmons, 1716, and Abraham Simmons, 1708. ( This is based on information that I have not yet proven ) He married Molly Bemis in Spencer on Dec. 10, 1797 ( Vital Records of Spencer ) so the eldest of these children may have been born in Massachusetts, but several were likely born in Vermont between 1800 and 1815, approximately, since they had moved to VT by 1800. Common family names...as you can see... were Job, Jeremiah, Abraham, plus the Howland name on the mother's side. Jeremiah Simmons and Molly, his wife, of Brookfield, convey for the sum of $70, their rights to the estate of Elijah Bemis to Jonas Bemis of Spencer. Elijah Bemis, the son of Jonas Bemis and Dolla Wood, died 21 Sept 1798 in Spencer. The Jonas Bemis mentioned in this deed is Molly Bemis Simmons's brother, Jonas, since their father died in 1790. This confirms that Molly Bemis who married Jeremiah Simmons on 10 Dec 1796 in Spencer was the daughter of Jonas Bemis and the sister of Elijah Bemis and Jonas Bemis, Jr. It also confirms that her real name was Mary, since she is referred to throughout the document as Molly, but signs her name as Mary. I believe it is also proof that Elijah Simmons, the son of Molly Bemis and Jeremiah Simmons, was named after her deceased brother, Elijah, probably out of respect to his memory.
