My Grandmother Henrietta Hunt was born and raised in Athens Ohio. I have accounts from her on the history of Mayflower and Nantucket families who moved out to Ohio. Her ancestors established the Town of New Plymouth. Some family names are Barret, Bartlet, Hunt. She talked about how the families came down the river to settle there.

I did not know the reason why so many went out to Ohio until I read your question. I always thought it odd that these established New England families uprooted themselves to go into the wilderness.
