After finding the listing of Margaret's year of immigration on the census records, I found the information about Margaret and Patrick Donlan by digging through the Boston Passenger lists and comparing the information I found to Salem City directories (on Ancestry) and marriage records (on AmericanAncestors.org)
I did mention that Margaret Donlon arrived in Boston on the "S.S.New England" which sailed from Queenstown, Ireland on 20 April 1899, arriving on the 28th of April. Margaret's brother Patrick, who had paid for Margaret's passage to America, had sailed from Queenstown, Ireland on 28 May 1897 aboard the "S. S. Pavonia".There happens to be a Catherine Donlan, widow, on that same ship (Pavonia), but if she is related to Patrick, she may be an aunt or a cousin, not his mother. She is listed as going to stay with her daughter Mrs. Doyle at 20 Hardy Street, Salem.Turns out that it is Michael Doyle listed at that address in the 1897 Salem directory. When I look up his marriage, it says he married Kate Donlon, the daughter of Michael and Kate Hanley.(not Patrick Donlon and Catherine Byrne).
If I get a chance, I will try again to find the passenger list for the correct Michael Manning in 1902 or 1903.
If he did, in fact, arrive either of those years, then he ought to be listed on the 1901 census in Galway, Ireland.
See: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
There are several Michael Mannings in Galway in 1901, but I don't see an exact match of one with parents Michael and Catherine. There is a Michael living with Marlin and Catherine, but I don't know if this is the right couple.
There is also a Michael of the right age who is a servant of another family.
That's all for now.
Margaret
