Serious genealogy isn't free. Sometimes you have to pay only to find out you are barking up the wrong tree. It happens.
As an alternative to the IFHF, you can contact the General Register Office for Republic of Ireland's rcds at http://www.groireland.ie. For Northern Ireland, google "PRONI." These are government agencies, but they both charge fees for their searches - even those with negative results.
You can also try GENUKI for English/Scotch/Irish rcds. At some point, it charges a fee as well.
