Hi Joel,
I am descended from Robert McKinley Lyons
the tenth child of Elkana and Charlotte.
Let me share this information that was
given to me.I hope it can be of some help.
Elkana B.was the son of John W.Lyons born
circa 1796,Harrison Co.Va.He was a farmer.
His wife Lydia was born circa 1799,Va.
She died sometime between 1850 and 1857.
(She was listed as Johns wife in the 1850
census and John, listed as a widower, was secondly married in 1857).No record has been found of Johns death. He was last found in the
1870 census living near Limestone Hill, wirt county and was 74 yrs.old.John was secondly married to Sarah Wonier aug.12,1857,Wirt Co.
John was 61 yrs.old and Sarah was 26 yrs. old
Land grant book 1, page 24 states that John
was given 25 acres of land in Wirt Co. by virtue of Land Office Treasury Warrant 17370
and dated Nov.2, 1828. The land was situated
on Shelvin Rock Run, a branch of Slate Creek.John was the son of Abel and Mary.
In the first census of 1790, Abel was living
in Otsego town, Montgomery County, New York
withhis wife Mary and two male children.
Otsego is located south of Utica,NY. In the 1810 census they were living in Harrison County, Va.(now WV). Abels age was given as over 45 and Marys as between 26 & 45 yrs. In
the 1820 census they were living in Wood Co.,
Va. ( Wirt Co. had not yet been formed so he
could have been living in what is now Wirt Co). Listed in his family was two male children and three female children. Both Able
and Marys ages was given as over 45 yrs.(It
wasn't until the 1850 census that names of
family members was listed. Until then, only
head of household was listed). Neither Abel
or Marys name was found in the 1830 census
of Wirt or Wood Co. so it is presumed they had died or moved elsewhere. A great-grandson, Robert Lyons, remembered being told that the family had come down through Pa. to W.Va. and some settled here and others went west. There is quite a lot
of Lyons names in Harrison Co. records, in the early 1800's, but, so far, no actual records has been found as to whether they were children of Abel and Marys. Records have been found for two of their children: John and Sarah. This is all the information that
was given to me and I hope it helps. Good luck.
