John Lynch, age 3-4, New York City 1860 census

I’ve been stuck for years trying to trace back my ggfather, John Henry Lynch, born 8 Aug 1856 in New York City, orphaned at age 8 or so and eventually sent west on an orphan train ending up in Litchfield Illinois. I'm looking at the 1860 New York City census, trying to check for John Lynches who would have been 3 or 4, depending on the census date, and I am finding more possible matches than I thought I would. I would love to hear from anyone who has such a John Lynch relative in the 1860 New York City census & any history so I can rule in or rule out.
