Search the 1850 census to find the Joseph's parents. Most likely it will state "born in Ireland" beside their names. It should also give their ages. Therefore you can estimate their DOB and DOM.

With this info you can jump across the pond to continue your search in Ireland. Note - Irish rcds B4 1840 are increasingly sparse, rare B4 1800. His parents B/M events mayn't have been rcd'd, rcds didn't survive, or haven't been transcribed yet.

Google "Irish Family History Foundation" to lead you to a database for Ireland.
