Joseph Lynch/ Help solve a family mystery

My great great grandfather was Joseph Lynch of Albany, NY. His parents were Matlida and James – they had several children – John, James, Joseph, Mary and Daniel. Joseph was born around 1844 – 1846. He served in the union army around 1862. He came to Columbia, SC and married my great great grandmother Harriett Thomas. She came from a large family with several brothers who served on the confederate side of the war. All we know is that somehow he made his way to SC – married my grandmother, had a child and was shot in killed in October of 1875 in SC. We have found local newspaper archives that document his murder but give very little and misleading details. If anyone has any connections to this family or has any information - our family would be immensely grateful.
