A biography/family history of Elias Fenn Lyman is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 821. Elias came from two of the oldest families in the country, the Lymans and Fenns, representatives of the families both coming to the American colonies in 1633, locating in Salem, Massachusetts. The grandfather, Elias Lyman, was born in South Hampton, Massachusetts, and moved to Trumbull County in the Western Reserve of Ohio, where he was one of the first pioneers. Elias Fenn Lyman was born, 15 Feb 1872, on the farm of his parents, Howard Fisk and Emarah Merriam (Fenn) Lyman. Howard Fisk Lyman was born in Trumball County, OH, on 30 Nov 1841, and Emarah was born in Ashtabula, OH, on 9 Sep 1848, and died 22 Feb 1872, having borne two children: Edna A. (Mrs. Joseph E. Haight); Elias Fenn. Howard Fisk attended public schools in Ohio and learned to be a farmer. On 14 Apr 1865, he enlisted in the Eighteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1866, he moved to Boone County, IA, where he engaged in farming and stock raising until 1883 when he located near what is now Armour, SD, farming until selling his ranch in the spring of 1901 and retiring to Redlands, CA. In 1908, he came to Cascade County, MT, and bought a ranch of 920 acres in the vicinity of Great Falls. Elias Fenn Lyman attended public schools of Iowa and graduated from Yankton College, Yankton, SD, in 1895. He took a theological course at the Chicago Theological Seminary and graduated in 1899 as a Bachelor of Theology. He first served at the Congregational Church, Alcester, SD, and his charge was Milbank. In 1905, he was made pastor of the First Congregational Church in Great Falls, MT, for three years. He resigned the ministry and spent the subsequent year on his father's farm. He then began farming and stock raising in Chestnut Valley, MT, specializing in breeding Holstein-Freisian cattle, and carrying on a dairy business with milk delivery to Great Falls. He was president of the Cascade Co-operative Association, a mercantile concern. On 30 Dec 1897, Elias married Emily Ada Perrin, born at Garden Grove, Iowa.
