The immigrant Richard LYMAN is alleged to be the 23rd great grandson (!!!!!!!) of King Alfred the Great who ruled from 871 to 899. Each one of those 23 parent-child linkages must be correct for this to be true. I have seen several genealogies claim royal descent for several of my ancestors. In EVERY case, there are critics who find a fatal flaw in the claim and discredit the author. Yet the claims continue to be reprinted until you have 10 books all claiming it to be true. Unfortunately they may all be based upon one original, albeit inaccurate, reference. One need only one wrong link in the chain to discredit the claim. I have learned to be profoundly skeptical of any lineage stretching back prior to 1300.
