Hi Wendy
I just found out this past Monday that my grandfather, Thomas Lyles is indeed the son of Nathanial Lyles, and that Nathanial Lyles/Liles is the son of Sherrod Lyles/Liles. I also discovered this past Monday that Nathanial's first wife was MALISSA HUDSON, daughter of William Newton Hudson and Elizabeth F. Dupree. I also found William and Elizabeth Hudson and family in the 1860 census in Wilkinson Co., GA, then again with Elizabeth as head of household and Malissa was 8 yrs old. Then in the 1880 census again with Elizabeth as head of household with Malissa, Josephine, and William II. The census taker transposed Josephine's and Malissa's age in the 1880 census. Actually Malissa was 18 and Josephine, her sister, was 29. Two doors down was Sherrod Lyles/Liles with Nathanial listed as his son. The mystery of who Thomas' father was is solved. The mystery still lurks as to when Nathanial and Malissa got married, and whatever happened to the other children, Rosa M. b. Nov 1883, and John b. 1892. We know nothing about Malissa, how she died or where she is buried. My aunt said that when Thomas left home, he took a younger brother with him, I'm assuming John. John was said to have died but nobody knows where or when or why. Now that I know who Thomas' mother was and the names of her siblings, maybe I can figure out which brother of his mother's he went to live with. Rosa M. is a big mystery also. Who did she marry? Did she have children? I was unsure of the line of Lyles that I come from because I was unsure of who my great grandfather was. This information that you gave me helps me clear up a lot of questions on the Lyles side. I can actually build a family tree past Grandpa Thomas Lyles now at least on the Lyles side. Now I have to figure out what happened to my great grandmother Malissa and the rest of the siblings. Grandpa Thomas Lyles was a good provider for his family but he was closed mouthed about his Lyles family. My grandfather Thomas Lyles married Ernestine Cowart, and among other children, they had a set of twins, TommyJoe (my father) and his twin sister MALISSA, b. Jan 1825. No one ever knew why Grandpa Thomas Lyles named the twin girl MALISSA--until now. He named her after his mother. Malissa the twin sister of my dad TommyJoe died during childbirth in the 1940's. The doctor gave her too much ether (what they used back then to put people to sleep for surgeries, etc). This mistake took Malissa's and her baby's life. They are buried together in Seminole County FL. I am going to visit the website that you referenced. You were right on the money on this. Thanks again. Are you related to the Lyles? Don
