It was the custom in Luxembourg and also in Germany for a male child to be named after the Godfather and for a female child to be named after the Godmother. So sometimes you could end up with several boys or girls in the same family having the same name.So while it was also common for a family to name another sibling for a dead child that is not the only reason for duplicate names. Quite often the Godfather for the first boy would be the Paternal Grandfather and the Godmother for the first girl to be the Maternal Grandmother if they were living.
