I have been trying to find a birth record for my immigrant gggrandfather, John Wolff in Luxembourg records. The Luxembourg Gazette reported his 12-Mar-1890 death in Alton, IA, stating that he was from Dommeldingen and came to US in 1857 with his family. His tombstone says that he was born in 1826. In Passenger Lists, I found a 24 year old Jean Wolff from Luxembourg on the ship Cynosure, which left Havre and arrived in New Orleans on 30-Mar-1857. There are no other Wolffs on board. I do not know if this is my John Wolff. In the US, he served in the Civil War from 1862-65. He married Margaret Manderscheid (b 11-nov-1843, Contern, Lux) in Bellevue, IA on 19-Nov-1866. She came to the US in 1855 with a sister and brother-in-law, Magdalena and Michael Biever. I have found several John Wolffs in the Eich records, but none match up with the 1826 birth date. I have no information on his parents or siblings to help identify his family. Recently, I located a 1946 Remsen, IA newspaper article reporting on the visit of Andre Wolff (Commissioner of Information in Luxembourg), who was asking US Luxembourg communities for help with their war orphans. The article stated that his father's brother, John Wolff (my gggrandfather) came to US while his father remained in Luxembourg. I am seeking any information on Andre Wolff, his parents, grandparents. I would be grateful for any information that will help me locate my John Wolff in Luxembourg records. Thank you very much. Notify Administrator about this message?
