Thank you! That does help. The year was 1824 and it is exactly the date John Schrup stated was his birthdate. I was so excited to find him. I looked further back through the records and found his brother Peter who came over with him. They were very close but Peter died not too long after his arrival. I also found their sister Maria Elizabeth.

Haven't found the marriage of Mathias and Joanna, but a gentleman from Luxembourg who is helping a relative with another line found the birth record for Joanna. Those records are wonderful. I wonder if they knew what a treasure they were leaving future generation when they wrote them.

I just looked up the census for my husband's family, also from Luxembourg, and there were three Johan brothers in the family. It would be interesting to discover how that tradition got started.
