Dear Jean,
I found the following:
1895 Minnesota State Census for 1895 lists a Peter Basting, age 51 from Luxembourg. He is a hotel keeper. Also with him is Mrs. Mary Basting, age 33 also born in Luxembourg. Both of their parents are foreign born. The census was taken June 4, 1895. The lived in Hampton Township, Dakota County, Minnesota.
In the 1900 United States Census for Minnesota, taken June 13, they are still living in the same area. The census shows that Peter was born August 1840 and is 59 years old, married 11 years. He immigrated in 1880 and is a naturalized citizen. He does not have an occupation shown. He owns his house which is not a farm and he does not have a mortgage on the house.
His wife Maria was born September 1861 and she is 38 years old, married 11 years and has had 3 children of which only one is living.
Daughter Katherine is 4 years old, born in June of 1895.
Living with the family is Peter's brother Nicholas, born February 1838. He is 62 years old and single. He also does not have an occupation. He immigrated in 1881 and is a naturalized citizen.
On the 1900 census, Peter, Maria and Nicholas are shown as having been born in Germany as were their parents. This is pretty much how Luxembourgers seem to be classified on our censuses. Rarely will you see Luxembourg as a place on our censuses.
Our federal censuses for 1890 were destroyed in a fire.
On the 1910 census, Maria is living in the city of St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota with her daughter. Maria is widowed and living with a John Schmit, age 35 and a widower who was born in Minnesota but his parents were born in Germany. Maria is listed as a servant and is shown as having immigrated in 1884.
Couldn't find Maria and Katherine on the 1920 census doing just a quick search.
1930 Census shows Maria living in the same city with her daughter Catherine (sic) and Catherine's husband Alexander Berg or Burg. Catherine and Alex. have been married about 10 years.
Too many Schmits and variations to find the one that you are looking for at this time.
