Dear Rosalie, Have you looked at any of the microfilmed records that the Mormon church filmed? Since the family lived in Ypsi and my great grandfather's 3 brothers from Lux ended up in Ypsi., I would look at the records for Echternach as the other person mentioned since my relatives came from that area at one time. May even have known each other in Luxembourg as well as Ypsilanti. I think they immigrated around the early 1860s to 1868. Did you check the 1884 Michigan state census for Ypsilanti as well as the 1894. One or both of them state how long the persons have lived in the area as well as in the county, I think. The 1870 census for Detroit shows that a Peter and Margaret Schaff have a 4 year old child born in Michigan. If correct, that would mean that they were here in 1866. Possibly they married here. I would check the Wayne County marriage registers as well as the Catholic Church records which are at the Burton Historical Collection of the main Detroit Public Library. I would look for a church with a German speaking congregation. You might want to check an 1870 Detroit City Directory to see where ward 4 was and then find the church that way.
