Rob is, or course, correct. The name “Schoff” is not found in Luxembourg. The name “Schaff” however is found in Luxembourg, I have seen a few of this name in the eastern part of Luxembourg in and around the Canton of Echternach. The names Schoff and Schaff are nearly identical to the ear as they are to the eye when written in script. The orthography of the names a hundred or more years was pretty “flexible”. As a point of interest, in my family, about 200 years ago, the family name was spelled differently for each of the five children (although they were all homonyms) – I think the difference may have stemmed from the amount of wine consumed at the baptismal celebration. :-)

Following the Napoleonic Wars the Treaty of Vienna gave to Prussia much of the land east of the Soure River (which forms much of the eastern border of Luxembourg). This included the area around Trier , the Eiffel, Bitbourg, and the rest. So an inhabitant of Echternach would only need to cross over a bridge to meet and marry a Prussian. This gives more credence to the idea that a Schaff from Luxembourg may have origins in the Canton Echternach or Canton Bech.

I hope this gives you a few more leads.

Ron
